Merriman and his colleagues found that, while Walmart created 320 full-time jobs, another 298 equivalent jobs were lost, with as much as 25 percent of the neighboring small retailers being driven out of business after the big box store opened its doors. Of the original 306 businesses surveyed, 82 had gone out of business during the course of the study. Even with Walmart generating over $10 million in sales tax revenue, the study found there was no overall growth in tax receipts in the area.
