is it the media that’s the problem, or the consumers of it that dictate its content with their preferences?
I remember first becoming acutely aware of this classic chicken-and-egg question when Princess Diana died. Was it the paparazzi’s fault for pursuing her so doggedly or the gossip-hungry masses who read the rags that the paparazzi work for? I’m still not sure I have an answer. However, in today’s world where many media organizations fear their extinction, I think the pendulum of fault is swinging more towards us, the news consumers. In their naked attempts to pander to their audience (not always a bad thing), media organizations are no longer setting the agenda. Increasingly, the agenda is being set by you and me.
